Primetrace Founder Story: From a Facebook Ad Test to a Reported ₹200 Crore EBITDA Run Rate
Four ex-Pratilipi colleagues asked users what app to build, then spent six years turning the answer into a portfolio of consumer apps.

Four Pratilipi colleagues and a hackathon idea that lost

Abhishek Kejriwal and his three co-founders came from Pratilipi, where they explored ideas for India's next billion internet users. Before building Kutumb, they tested different concepts and eventually identified a strong demand for a community-focused app.

An ad for an app that did not exist

The founders used Facebook lead ads to test ideas before developing a product. Around 30% of responses asked for a community app. Conversations with community leaders revealed problems with WhatsApp groups, broadcast groups and Facebook Groups. These insights led to Kutumb, which focused on communication and fund management for organisations.

ID cards, reputation points and a five-person team

The team tested Kutumb by speaking with users on days 7, 14 and 30 and measuring how much they valued the product. Digital ID cards and reputation points helped drive referrals and organic growth. The company reportedly reached one million users while operating with only five people and without marketing spend.

The $26 million round that put Kutumb on the map

In June 2021, Tiger Global led a Series A round of approximately $26 million. The funding significantly increased Kutumb's valuation and positioned Primetrace among India's notable consumer internet startups.

When ads could not pay the bills

By 2023, Kutumb had millions of monthly and daily users, but advertising alone did not appear to offer a scalable monetisation model. The company therefore explored subscriptions and other consumer-focused products, eventually expanding beyond Kutumb.

What the filings show, and what the company says

FY25 filings showed operating revenue of ₹128.6 crore and net profit of ₹12 crore. However, advertising and promotion expenses were substantial and the reported EBITDA margin remained negative. Primetrace later claimed a ₹550 crore annual revenue run rate and ₹200 crore EBITDA run rate as of February 2026. These later figures are company claims and should be distinguished from filed financial results.

Where Primetrace sits among Bharat’s consumer apps

Primetrace initially focused on community products but has expanded into consumer applications such as Crafto AI, Tarot AI, Sundar AI and Polo. Its strategy increasingly focuses on everyday needs of users beyond India's largest cities and on AI-powered consumer applications.

Net worth and valuation: what can and cannot be said

There is no reliable publicly confirmed figure for Abhishek Kejriwal's personal net worth. Primetrace's valuation was estimated at around $167–170 million following its 2021 Series A. Reports in 2026 suggested discussions for a $50 million round at approximately a $500 million valuation, but the transaction had not been independently confirmed as of 28 October 2026.

How Kejriwal learns, and what he says about founding teams

Kejriwal has said that he learns through podcasts, social media feeds and conversations with other founders. He also emphasises compatibility among co-founders, arguing that missing skills can be hired but poor founder relationships can affect the entire company.

What other founders can take from the Primetrace playbook

1. Ask an open question before you build:
Let potential customers identify the problem instead of assuming what they need.

2. Pay in status when cash does not move people:
Recognition, reputation and community status can sometimes be stronger incentives than small monetary rewards.

3. Settle retention before you spend on growth:
Sustainable growth requires users to continue finding value in the product.

4. Do the revenue arithmetic early:
Understanding the scale required for an advertising model can help founders identify better monetisation strategies.
5. Test for loss, not just liking: Understanding whether users would miss the product provides a stronger validation signal.

What to watch next

The company's FY26 financial filings will provide a clearer picture of its claimed growth and profitability. The reported $50 million funding round would also clarify whether the approximately $500 million valuation becomes an actual transaction. Consistent and clearly defined user metrics will be another important area to watch.
